Why Finding Good Tradespeople is Hard in Cyprus
Cyprus has a relatively small population and a close-knit local contractor market. Recommendations travel by word of mouth, licensing requirements are inconsistently enforced, and many good tradespeople are booked weeks in advance. The result: plenty of availability at the lower end of quality, and fierce competition for the reliable ones.
Start with Word-of-Mouth
The most reliable way to find a good handyman or contractor in Cyprus is still personal recommendation. Ask your neighbours, your building manager, or expat Facebook groups (search "Expats in Limassol" or "Moving to Cyprus" — both have active communities where tradespeople are regularly recommended and warned against).
Check Licensing for Regulated Trades
Some trades in Cyprus are regulated and require a license:
- Electricians must be registered with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC)
- Plumbers should hold a license from the Department of Civil Aviation (for gas work) or the local municipality
- Building contractors must be registered with the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK)
Always ask for their registration number and verify it if you can — a legitimate tradesperson will have no problem providing this.
Get Multiple Quotes — Always
For any job over €200, get at least three written quotes. The range of prices for identical work in Cyprus can be enormous — sometimes 3x between the cheapest and most expensive. A very low quote from an unverified contractor is a red flag, not a bargain.
